Bioinsight Involved In The Third Review Of The Portuguese Bat Monitoring Guidelines At Wind Farms
The 3rd review of the Portuguese bat monitoring guidelines at wind farms took place on 17th January 2017, in a joined meeting promoted both by the Portuguese Environmental Authority (“Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente” – APA) and the National Institute for the Conservation of Nature (“Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas” – ICNF). Various stakeholders were present at this meeting and strongly engaged on the review, namely environmental consultancy companies, researchers and promotors from the energy sector. The meeting started with the presentation of several relevant communications and Bioinsight was one the speakers. Our communication focused on the comparison the present proposal document of the guidelines with several other European (EUROBATS guidelines, UK and Poland) and South African guidelines and at the end contributes from our international experience were expressed.
The communications section was followed by an intense review of the document that lasted the entire afternoon.
The guidelines, that had their last review in 2009, were updated in light of the advances of technology and the most recent findings and research work regarding bat monitoring issues. At the end the feeling was that everyone was satisfied with the final outcome and are now awaiting the official release of the document.
