Recently published scientific article shows spatial distribution of wintering roosts and movements of Red kites and indicate a recent expansion of the species' distribution range in Portugal
The recently published scientific article was based on the findings of a past project undertaken between 2010 and 2011 at the Portuguese Special Protected Area Castro Verde in South Portugal. The project aimed to study the distribution and estimation of population of several species and results about the Red kite (Milvus milvus) were recently published in the Portuguese Airo journal. Results indicate a recent expansion of the species' distribution range in Portugal probably due to the changes in habitat and food availability. The article also highlight the importance of the Castro Verde' SPA for the species has it holds up to 53% to 67% of the species' national southern wintering population.
