Biodiversity and Wind Farms in Portugal – Book Presentation]]>http://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2018/01/26/Biodiversity-and-Wind-Farms-in-Portugal-Book-Presentationhttp://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2018/01/26/Biodiversity-and-Wind-Farms-in-Portugal-Book-PresentationFri, 26 Jan 2018 13:56:36 +0000
Last week, January 18, we gathered (with the support of Springer) some of the most renowned environmental specialists (both national and international) to present our book “Biodiversity and Wind Farms in Portugal”.
Our invited speakers were:
Johann Köppel, Professor and head of the Environmental Assessment and Planning Research Group of the Berlin Institute of Technology (Germany). Dr. Köppel presentation was titled: “Understanding the problem: wind energy and environmental problems” ();
Our own Joana Santos, Ecologist & Terrestrial Ecosystems Specialist,
talked about: “Assessing the problem | Three different visions (UK / PT / South Africa)” ();
Roël May, Senior Research Scientist at Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), presented us “Solutions for a sustainable management” ();
Sara Vieira, Head of Unit of APA - Portuguese Environment Agency, talked about “Wind farms in PT – the perception of authorities (APA)” ().
António Sá da Costa, President of APREN – Portuguese Renewable Energy Association, and Vice President of EREF - European Renewable Energy Federation, brought us the theme: “Wind farms in PT – the perception of developers (APREN)” ();
And, finally, Alvaro Cardenal Camiña, Environmental Specialist from the International Finance Corporation, presented: “Financial Institutions and Wind Farms” ().
Following the points-of-view brought by this team of specialists, it was time for our book presentation.
“Biodiversity and Wind Farms in Portugal” presents a review of the state-of-the-art knowledge on the interactions between biodiversity and wind energy development, focused on the Portuguese reality. The volume addresses the particularities of the impact assessment procedures in Portugal, contrasting it with the international practices and presenting its main findings by covering the following broader themes:
i) evaluation of spatial and temporal dynamics of wildlife affected by wind farms, including birds, bats and terrestrial mammals (in particular the Portuguese wolf population);
ii) the methodologies used to assess impacts caused by this type of developments in biodiversity;
iii) the best practice methodologies to implement an adaptive management approach to reconcile biodiversity and wind farms.
The knowledge presented in this book was gathered through the research and development activities executed by Bioinsight company (former Bio3 company) during the last 13 years, and partially funded by the R&D project “Integrated solutions for biodiversity management at wind farms: reduce and compensate bird and bat mortality” (acronym: Wind & Biodiversity), co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), under the Regional Operational Programme of Centre (Mais Centro).
This volume fills a void in the literature, giving insights on the best practices to install and manage a wind farm from a biodiversity management point of view, while establishing a commitment between economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
Miguel Mascarenhas, Bioinsight’s manager, was tasked with the honour of presenting “Biodiversity and Wind Farms in Portugal”.
It is worth to highlight some points brought to us by Miguel’s presentation. First, the book is the culmination of our company’s experience so far on the wind energy field, with 280 projects over the last 10 years. Our experience was a determining factor in Springer’s invitation to write this book.
It is also noteworthy that Bioinsight is not collecting any revenues with the sale of the book. We made this investement, with time commitment and human resources, because as “one of the shareholders, we need to inspire other people”, like other people inspire us. In Miguel’ words, “so that people can discuss, I think is important to put [our knowledge] in the open”, and this was the main motivation to accept this challenge.
The book itself is a repository of the work and knowledge of many people with a very rich background, and not only those who’s name is in each chapter. The experience of many people made it possible to explore several areas, regarding the balance between environment and wind farms.
Miguel ended his presentation with a challenge: to have other people read the book, criticise it, and write new books, continuously contributing to enrich our collective knowledge of the interactions between wind energy and biodiversity.
We count with your contribution to solidify this commitment between economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
You can get your own copy of the book “Biodiversity and Wind Farms in Portugal” Here.

Last month saw two of Wind Energy’s main events worldwide take place: WINDABA in Cape Town, South Africa; and Wind Europe, this year in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Understanding the importance of these events to keep up with sector news and opportunities, Bioinsight exhibited at both, as it has been usual for the last few years.
Our presence in loco made possible to stay in touch with some of the main players, learn from them, and share some of our own knowledge and experience. According to Sérgio Loureiro, International Business Development for Bioinsight, “our presence at events like WINDABA and WindEurope is important to build new relationships, as the market for wind energy continues to grow around the world”. At the end of both events Bioinsight brought back dozens of meaningful meetings, new business opportunities, and a stronger connection with key global and local wind energy promoters.
We continue to value very highly our presence on these events and we are looking forward for the next year’ editions. In the meantime, check some images gathered in this year editions.

CWW2017 – Energy for a Cleaner and more Sustainable World]]>http://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2017/09/11/CWW2017-%E2%80%93-Energy-for-a-Cleaner-and-more-Sustainable-Worldhttp://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2017/09/11/CWW2017-%E2%80%93-Energy-for-a-Cleaner-and-more-Sustainable-WorldMon, 11 Sep 2017 17:38:16 +0000
For those of you who followed our social media channels for the last couple of weeks, you witnessed our participation at CWW2017. Our participation in this 3-day conference, however, started way back, when the conference was on its Berlin edition in 2015. During that event, it was announced Portugal would host CWW 2017 and since then, Bioinsight actively participated and was highly committed with this organization.
In 2015, the economy still showed little signs of recovery from the crisis that ravaged Europe (with Portugal especially exposed) but still we decided to be part of this challenge, committing ourselves with a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment.
In a World which is currently shifting its energy sources, CWW (Conference on Wind energy and Wildlife impacts) is one of the most important global meetings on wind energy and wildlife protection. CWW presents the latest advances in technology and methodology in the evaluation, monitoring and mitigation of biodiversity impacts in the wind energy field.
As Miguel Torga, a twentieth century Portuguese writer, wrote:
I live nature, integrated within her in a way that sometimes I feel like a rock, dew, a flower or mist. No other event makes me feel so complete and fills my spirit with such a complete sense of perfectness and eternity.
We are certain that this conference is a key step to reconcile energy and economic development with nature, offering our contributions towards a cleaner, more sustainable world, and showing that we can coexist without imposing our presence.
Many people and institutions made this conference possible, even with limited resources, and we feel grateful and proud to be part of it.
See you all in 2019 in Scotland. Until then, you can take a peek at some images of the 2017 edition.

Meet Bioinsight's New Interns]]>http://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2017/08/25/Meet-Bioinsights-New-Internshttp://www.bioinsight.pt/single-post/2017/08/25/Meet-Bioinsights-New-InternsFri, 25 Aug 2017 16:46:14 +0000
Bioinsight went to summer market for reinforcements, counting now with 5 new interns in our team. Ana Simões, Diana Vieira and Joana Santos are at our office in Odivelas while Bárbara Freitas and Mafalda Moreira are at Aveiro’s Office. Let’s know them better.
Ana graduated in the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and decided to follow Biology inspired by her teacher during “field work, practical classes in universities, […] interesting lab work and scientific articles debates at the beginning of every classes”.
In her academic record, Ana already has several internships: at the UC Herbarium; at the FREELab (Sweetwater Ecology Lab) of the Functional Ecology Center of the UC; and at the NEMATOLab (Nematology Lab) also of the Functional Ecology Center of the UC.
During this internship at Bioinsight, Ana expects to expand her experience and “get to know the kind of work carried out by a biologist outside the academic context and acquire on-the-ground and office knowledge”, so she can build a new step in her education and so she can achieve her goal to “work on the botany field, specifically in biodiversity and/or in vegetal biotechnology, in a lab or in a company like Bioinsight ”.
As for Joana, it was the “fascination for the diversity of life forms and the concern for management and protection of the aquatic ecosystems and its resources” that led her to pursue biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. She graduated and completed her master´s degree in Marine Ecology at this faculty. She was involved with MARE – “Centro de Ciências do Mar e do Ambiente”, where she participated in several projects, such as: the “Ecological Impact of a European eel Restocking Experiment” project; the ETAR Monitoring Project; and the PROMAR Project – “PELSA – Sustainable management of the eel fishing at Santo André lagoon”.
At Bioinsight Joana hopes to challenge herself and acquire knowledge so she can “contribute in the best possible way for the natural resources management, highlighting its importance and reconciling its sustainability with its exploitation”.
In Diana’s case, it was her love for nature and her will to learn more about the aquatic environment, that led her to graduate in Aquatic Sciences at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar – University of Porto, and to get her master’s degree in Marine Biology and Conservation at the University Institute of Psychological, Social and of Life Sciences, Lisbon (ISPA).
During her academic path, Diana developed various professional skills by means of several internships: at the vivarium of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research; at the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf; and at the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation.
At Bioinsight Diana hopes to get experience and, mainly, “learn new tools and expand the knowledge acquired over my academic education” so she can manage to achieve her goals of “contributing for application of science as a tool to help the resolution of environmental issues”.
Bárbara holds a degree in Biology by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. She chose this area of sciences driven by her will to “learn more about the way beings live and to find out how they are related and their evolution”.
Over her academic education Bárbara attended several extracurricular activities such as small courses, workshops and internships, like the one in SPEA for the Life+Berlengas project. Besides that, she also had an internship in a project where she contributed to learn how seabirds use the Douro River Estuary.
So far, in this internship at Bioinsight, Bárbara already had the opportunity to help in various fieldwork activities related to impact monitoring, where she performed detectability tests and bat monitoring. But it’s not over, she keeps working and learning so she can fulfill her purpose of acquire a “notion of how it’s like to work in the biology field in a corporate context rather than an academic one”.
Finally, last but not least, Mafalda always felt attracted to nature and for the “logic inherent to life”. It was this and for being such a wide field, with very interesting areas, that led her to choose the Biology degree at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.
To enhance her knowledge, mainly in the marine biology, genetic and conservation field, Mafalda already counts with several curricular and extracurricular internships on her curriculum.
In the near future, Mafalda hopes to build a good work in the course of her master’s theses. In the long run her goal is to keep on the track of the things she loves, “work close to nature and, some day, bring something useful for the balance between her and society”.
As for Bioinsight, we feel proud to be part of the promising path of these youngsters and to have such an important role in their professional and personal evolution. We are unquestionably being part of the future of the biology in Portugal and in the rest of the world.
